In less than five minutes, a Reddit member from the Bitcoin subreddit claimed to have pulled off an almost magical stunt: guessing two Bitcoin seed phrases and accessing associated wallets that were, predictably, empty. Although some novice Bitcoin users may find the message shocking, there is a basic misconception about how seed phrases operate.
The foundation of wallet security, seed phrases, are produced in compliance with BIP39. They are made up of 12–24 words that are selected from a list of 2048 words. A seed phrase’s last word is a checksum, which acts as a safeguard against entering words incorrectly.

The checksum will not match if there is even a single misspelt word or if the sequence is jumbled, in which case the wallet software would usually reject the phrase. This means that without unnecessarily high processing power, “guessing” a seed word is nearly impossible.
The post’s creator most likely generated new wallet addresses rather than guessing already-existing seed phrases. It is statistically certain that a large number of seed phrase combinations result in unclaimed wallets since there are many possible possibilities. As so, even if the author’s assertion is technically correct, it is deceptive. They created fresh, unused wallets by accident rather than breaking into or using someone else’s wallet.
The BIP39 standard makes sure that there is very little chance of a seed phrase from an active wallet—especially one that contains money—being generated at random.
