Billy Markus, who in 2013 collaborated with fellow software developer Jackson Palmer to launch Dogecoin, the first meme cryptocurrency, has paid homage to the late meme Shiba Inu dog Kabosu on the X platform. Kabosu passed away on Friday.
DOGE founder comments on Kabosu’s passing
As a meme in 2010, Kabosu became the mascot of this first meme cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, and inspired its developers.
In a post about Kabosu speaking to Death, Markus—who goes by Shibetoshi Nakamoto on X—wrote that the dog says, “It’s time to go.” When she inquires about if she “was a good girl,” Death replies, “No.” You were said to be the greatest.
The internet meme community gave Markus support by sharing memes of Kabosu and her encounter with Harambe, the gorilla that gained notoriety after its demise in 2016.

At the age of 19, Kabosu passed away in Japan on Friday. The dog’s owner, Atsuko Sato, posted the depressing news on her blog. The meme coin community was made aware of her post via the official Dogecoin account on X.
Elon Musk’s impact on DOGE
Elon Musk, a fervent admirer of Dogecoin, also honoured Kabosu on Friday with a tweet. In response to the centibillionaire’s tweet, DOGE and another well-known meme currency, Shiba Inu (SHIB), saw brief increases in value. Musk said in a tweet that Kabosu “ascended to heaven” to meet Harambe, the gorilla who gained popularity in 2016 and turned into a joke. After the gorilla seized a little child who had gotten into its enclosure, a zoo employee was obliged to shoot the animal to death.
Although DOGE started out as a joke and satire of Bitcoin (BTC code was used in its creation), Elon Musk noticed the meme coin in the last seven or eight years and gave it a significant boost, aiding in its promotion and expansion of acceptance as a payment method and transforming it from a joke into a legitimate digital currency.
Shibetoshi Nakamoto frequently supports the X owner and his ambitions to turn the old Twitter into the ultimate “everything app,” X, which includes integrating the Grok AI chatbot. Markus and Musk frequently exchange remarks on X.
