A Bitcoin whale that had been sleeping for six years unexpectedly reappeared and moved its entire holding of 2,995 BTC, or almost $82.3 million, to two new addresses.
On May 7, 2016, when Bitcoin was only worth $459 per coin, the whale first bought these coins.
Other recent transfers
This is not the first time that inactive Bitcoin addresses have awoken. A third Bitcoin account that had been dormant for three years recently transferred nearly 5,000 BTC, or about $140 million, among three separate addresses.
In addition, a Bitcoin address thought to date from the time of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto was activated in August after lying dormant for over 13 years, transmitting 1,005 BTC worth around $29.7 million. The address’s age rekindled talk regarding its potential connections to Nakamoto.
Other such awakenings after protracted periods of hibernation included transfers of $56.3 million (2,100 BTC) and a substantial $252.5 million (15,000 BTC) in September and January, respectively.
Low volatility
According to statistics from CoinGecko, the price of Bitcoin is currently $27,595, a tiny increase of 1.1% over the previous 24 hours. Bitcoin’s market value is at $538.38 billion with a trading volume of around $11.98 billion during that time.
