Treeverse Review: A SCI-FI Fantasy NFT-Based MMORPG

In case you haven’t noticed, MMORPG seems to be the next trend in the GameFi space. Here, let’s talk about Treeverse, an upcoming sci-fi fantasy NFT-based MMORPG that is set to release in Q4 2022.

Taking inspiration from Runescape and Stardew Valley, Endless Clouds is the team that developed the game on the Ethereum blockchain. The experienced team has worked on popular titles like League of Legends, Uncharted 4, PUBG Mobile, and more. In fact, renowned NFT artist Loopify is also behind the project.

About Treeverse and its early history

The idea of Treeverse started from the NFT collection “NFTrees” launched by Loopify in February 2021. At that time, the intention was to design Treeverse as a social MMO game. On 1 Aug 2021, the team launched 10,420 Founders’ Private Plot (FPP) NFTs that sold out in an hour.

Then on 12 Sept, an alpha version was available for FPP holders. Back then, players can connect to their Metamask wallets and talk to friends and strangers. In fact, plot owners can display NFTs on the walls of their houses and visit each others’ houses in the game. Seeing a huge success from the FPP sale, the team decided to turn the game into a full-fledged MMORPG.

Meet the “new” Treeverse

After rebranding itself to MMORPG, players can expect to see an action-packed MOBA-style game instead. Outside the city, players get to slay beasts, level up, form guilds, defeat dungeons, and explore the deep lore. Just like any MMORPG, skills play an important part. Some of the skills that players need to upgrade include melee and range combat skills, crafting, mining, and more.

Treeverse will also feature its own in-game marketplace, where players can trade anything from weapons to armors to pets and more. You can earn these items in the game, then turn them into NFTs for sale in the marketplace.

As part of its P2E model, the game will adopt a dual-token system comprising of ERC-20 tokens $ROOT and $SEED. $ROOT will be the governance token, while $SEED will be the play-to-earn token. Both tokens are expected to be launched when we get closer to Q4 this year. At the time of writing, there is no clear indication yet of how the tokenomics work for both tokens.

Use cases of the Treeverse NFTs

Nonetheless, if you wish to be part of the Treeverse family, you can consider buying one of its NFTs. As of now, there are 3 NFT collections related to the Treeverse ecosystem. Let’s take a look!

  1. NFTrees: This collection consists of 420 randomly composed pixel trees. As the most valuable relic in the Treeverse, holders can place these trees in the game, let them bear fruits, and sell them to other players for $SEED. In fact, 90% of the $SEED paid for the fruit is given to the owner, while 10% will be burned. Additionally, the team also confirmed that NFTrees holders are eligible for future airdrops within the Treeverse ecosystem. At the time of writing, the floor price of NFTrees is sitting at a whopping 13.3 ETH on OpenSea.
  2. Founders’ Private Plot (FPP): With only 10,420 plots in total, each plot comes with an instance-based home in the Treeverse. If you own multiple, in the tiers of 2, 5, 10, and 20, you’ll have the ability to design bigger homes and even islands. But no worries, even if you don’t own a plot, you can still have a house. The only thing is that you can’t customize or showcase your NFTs in the free house. At the time of writing, the floor price is at 1.2 ETH on OpenSea.
  3. Timeless Characters: Now, Timeless Characters are playable 3D NFT avatars in Treeverse. Created by the talented artist @visionofviii, the entire collection will consist of 11,111 Timeless NFTs. There are 5 types of Timeless avatars that you can choose from: Hidden, Hatred, Natural, Glowing, or Bred Timeless. Each of these avatars may come with its own unique attributes and abilities.

Investors and prominent backers

Additionally, it is worth mentioning that Treeverse raised $25 million in funds from prominent investors such as IdeoCo Labs, Animoca Brands, and Skyvision Capital. The fundraising event took place back in October last year. Given the amount of funding, Endless Clouds is confident that they can build the next biggest blockchain game. In fact, the team is in need of more talented developers to join them.

Looking at its Twitter followers, Treeverse has attracted the attention of many GameFi and crypto veterans. Some of them include popular GameFi Youtuber Cagy Jan, @thebuffessor, and even Delphi Digital’s game designer @0xRyze.

What’s next for Treeverse?

Treeverse has come a long way since 2021. But there’s much work to be done. For one thing, Endless Clouds has acknowledged that MMORPG is one of the hardest games to develop. Currently, the team is working hard to release a playable version of the game with updated graphics. And, they have decided to develop the game for Android first, followed by iOS, PC, and Mac afterward.

Apart from the game’s graphics, there are a few aspects to look forward to in this project. These include details of its gameplay, tokenomics, roadmap, and partnership announcements. We hope the team is able to reveal more info in the upcoming months.

Final thoughts

All in all, MMORPG is clearly making its way into the GameFi space. In the past, blockchain games are mainly comprised of strategy card games like Axie Infinity and Cryptoblades. However, card games can be boring as most of them do not provide vertical progression for in-game characters. MMORPG on the other hand offers players a sense of achievement by leveling up their characters, completing dungeons, and beating massive raids. In fact, you can even make new friends along the way.

Nonetheless, many brands do recognize the lack of blockchain MMORPG in the scene. Even traditional gaming firms like Krafton and Activision Blizzard are looking to integrate their MMORPG titles into the blockchain as well. Given the pace of development, MMORPG will soon dominate the space of GameFi. Let’s just wait and see.
